10 Tips
Top Ten Tips For Commissioning an Oil Portrait.
Ask what type of canvas the artists are painting on. Some lower grade portrait and reproduction artists use synthetic canvas. Oil paints loosen off this type of canvas over time, degrading the quality of your painting. A high quality natural canvas is key to preserving the luster of your oil painting.
Make sure your oil painting is hand painted. Read the small print on sites and look for impostors. Many reproduction companies and portrait companies will airbrush their paintings or computer generates them. In a true hand painted work, the artist's brush strokes will be visible....find more tips

Who will be painting my commissioned work?

Museum Oil Paintings will select one of our fine oil portrait artists based on the characteristics and elements of your oil painting. Each artist in our diverse network has been critiqued for their outstanding skill in a particular artistic style. Click Here for Portraits page.

Will I be able to see the artist’s brush strokes?

Yes. All of our oil paintings are entirely hand painted on woven canvas. As with any oil work, you will be able to see each detailed brush stroke left by the hand of the artist. Our paintings are fashioned without the aid of computers or machinery and are NOT prints on canvas, print transfers, lithographs or giclees. We represent only the finest hand painted oil paintings produced by expert artists specializing in master oil painting techniques.

As a client, can I offer suggestions or input to the painting?

Of course. Upon completion of the first painted draft, a digital copy will be provided for your approval. If necessary, you may request alternations or adjustments in relation to your previous instructions. The artist will then take your requests and alter the oil painting accordingly. Before a commissioned work is shipped to your home, you will be required to approve the final work. We want you to be 100% satisfied with your oil painting and treasure it for years to come. If you are unsatisfied, you can simply return the painting, no questions asked.

Are your oil reproductions identical to the original works?

Our artists’ attention to original detail is exceptional, although every oil painting leaving our studio is unique. As with any painting by hand, slight variances in brush strokes from the original artist’s work will occur. This only accentuates the fine quality of a hand painted oil and assures you of its authenticity. Our artists are committed to reproducing the best matches for shades, tones and strokes in your oil painting.

What mediums do you have available for custom portraits and reproductions?

Museum Oil Paintings offers premium quality oil paintings and oil portraits.  We have chosen this traditional medium for its rich color, expressive depth and visual impact.

What sizes of custom oil portraits are available?

Our commissioned portraits are fashioned to your specifications.  Please refer to our Portraits page for available canvas sizes.  If you require a canvas outside of our listed dimensions, please inform us of your needs as we have a diverse network of custom oil painting masters that can easily accommodate your needs.

Am I able to combine two or more photographs into one oil painting?

Our network of unique artists are able to create composite oil paintings from two or more photographs.  You will be asked to outline in detail how you would like the final work to look.  We recommend that you maintain compatibility by considering:

  • The relative balance of the individual, such as a photo of a person’s face or a full body shot.
  • The sight line of the subject, will your subjects be gazing in the same direction and look natural.
  • The attire of the subject.  A woman wearing a summer dress will not look natural in a composite of individuals in winter wear.
  • The stance of the subject and whether an individual is standing or sitting in one photo, or looking in opposite directions from one another.
  • The viewer’s perspective.  Photographs should be taken from the same angle, such as both from above or both at eye level.

Why do your oil paintings take so long to complete?

The completion time at Museum Oil Paintings is comparable to that in any studio specializing in oil paintings.  Oil paints have an exceptionally long “open time”, meaning the paint is very slow to dry.  The paints oxidize into a dry solid, rather than evaporating as water-based paints do.  Certain pigments of oil paints may take several weeks to dry.  This allows the artist to return to the canvas over several sessions to achieve the desired blending of colors and tones.  The final sealing coat is not applied until all pigments have fully dried.  We will never compromise the quality of our oil paintings to satisfy a rush order.  Clients can expect to receive their completed work within an average of three weeks of submitting the photograph.

How do you price your oil paintings?

Museum Oil Paintings values quality and will not compromise this for the sake of a quick sale.  Referrals are extremely important to us and we would rather build our name as an excellent gallery and gather exposure for the artists in our network than lower the quality of our work.

Our reproductions and commissioned oil portraits are exceptional, while offered at a reasonable price.  Oil paintings created by experienced artists are entirely hand painted.  Our artists use only the finest materials, artistry tools and canvas.  Our prices reflect the premium work that goes into each composition and our guarantee for customer satisfaction.

Unlike many galleries, Museum Oil Paintings does not charge our clients the usually 50% fee associated with additional figures in oil portraits.  Our  oil portraits are priced solely on the canvas size of our client’s choosing, regardless of the subject complexity.  We are able to offer our client’s unsurpassed value and quality because of our diverse network of talented artists.  Commission your oil painting today!

What does “authenticity” of the painting mean?

The shades and tones of colors in the painting can vary slightly from the shades of the image displayed on the Museum Oil Paintings website.  The colors are dependent on the settings and characteristics of the monitor of your computer, such as contrast and brightness.  Since the time of photographing the painting, the artist may have returned to the canvas and made alterations, creating slight variances from the photographs in our gallery.  A piece of original artwork is unique and should have sufficient proof when called upon to support the claim.

Will my painting infringe copyright law?

A masterpiece may be reproduced once it becomes part of the public domain.  The original artist and their estate hold the copyright to the work until 70 years has passed after their death.  Artworks that have not become part of the public domain require permission from the estate to reproduce.  Museum Oil Paintings is committed to respecting the rights of the original artist and will never accept a commissioned work that is subject to copyright infringement.

Clients whom commission portraits from photographs are assumed to retain the copyright to the original image, or to have expressed written consent to reproduce the image.  The client is liable for any infringements that falsifying this information may result in.

Why do you supply the painting unframed?

Once the painting is complete, it is removed from the canvas stretcher bars and carefully rolled.  It is packaged between several layers of artist’s folios to prevent damage.  Your painting will then be delivered securely wrapped in an artist’s tube casing, protected with a removable plastic sleeve.  The packaging allows for free shipping, as fine art is shipped duty free to many countries.  When shipping a framed painting, the frame is liable for import taxes.  Your painting on canvas can then be custom framed at your local framing store.  This allows you to design your frame to compliment your current home décor.

Will there be any taxes or import duty on my oil painting?

In the European Union, United States and other countries, Value Added Tax or VAT is typically not applicable.  Hand-painted oils on canvas are normally duty free.  In some countries, charges may be subject to import duties, local taxes and/or custom charges.  As custom policies differ greatly between countries, Museum Oil Paintings is not responsible for any form of additional charges by other countries.  We recommend contacting the Customs Service in your country directly.  They will be able to provide you their policies and regulations.  Museum Oil Paintings provides expert packaging and shipping for your oil painting, but is not responsible for investigations by customs authorities.  Please be aware that international shipments may be opened and inspected by custom authorities.

Our free international shipping policy does not cover import duties or taxes upon entry into the client’s country.  The client is responsible for any duties and/or taxes incurred on their shipment.  Typically, most countries do not charge import duties, local taxes or customs charges on shipments of fine art.

Do you have a public gallery?

Presently, we are exclusively an online gallery.  Museum Oil Paintings is thus able to reach a broad spectrum of clientele worldwide.  As a result, our gallery continues to grow and develop, cultivating international relations.  Our online gallery is revolutionizing the modern gallery, creating an accessible and comfortable environment for our clients.

Am I able to view your oil reproductions in a printed catalogue?

Our gallery has such a high turnover that a catalog of our reproductions quickly becomes outdated. To provide our customers with our current selection, we constantly update our online gallery. Eliminating a printed catalog provides our customers with efficient service, and helps to reduce the ecological impact of paper publishing.

Are previously commissioned portraits available for viewing?

The Museum Oil Paintings website presents a detailed portfolio of our custom oil paintings.  Our online portfolio highlights the intricate and beautiful artwork that we are so proud to provide.  Our client’s have come to expect quality and perfection from our diverse network of talented artists.  Your commissioned artwork will reflect the same intricate details and commitment to excellence as those found in our portfolio.

Why are other companies offering lower prices on reproductions and commissioned oil portraits?

Many reproductions are done quickly and without customer approval, often skimming over significant details and aspects of the original work.  Attention to detail, quality and especially likeness in portraits is of great importance to Museum Oil Paintings.   To maintain customer satisfaction, we make certain that all of our oil reproductions and commissioned oil paintings are carefully drafted and evaluated in collaboration with our customers, experienced artists, and service agents.
